What actually makes a style icon?

Style icons are often well-known people in public life, whose style in terms of clothing or make-up is felt by many to be worthy of imitation, such as Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe, Iris Apfel or Cary Grant and Günther Krabbenhöft and his wife, just to name a few people.
